Summary: Oma visits Daniel & Jack, to tell them that she is going to give them a child to protect. They visit their friends, Mohinder and Matt, who are also the Guardians of a child who is already a secret Hero
Oma reached out to Daniel, mirroring how she had when they first met. "You are Guardian of this child. I took your wife's son from you once, to keep him from the world, and from your enemy... Now, it is time for the new chapter! I must give you a child, Daniel. A child is coming, for you and Jack O'Neill to protect..."
Daniel looked over his shoulder at an equally astonished and perplexed Jack. Then, he turned back to Oma, and she was gone...
****
They talked about it for days. "What does she mean?" They were taking it in turns to ask. "What should we tell the SGC..? When should we tell them?"
"How will the child turn up?" Daniel asked, as Jack handed him a coffee. "How will Oma make him or her apparent to us? What will the child mean? Will she or he be in danger, or be a danger..?"
"Woahh, Daniel!" Jack put his hand on Daniel's hand. "Not that I'm not asking all these questions, too..."
"What should we do? What's coming, Jack..?" Daniel pondered, in hushed, worried tones. "I feel like Virgin Mary, visited by an Angel in the middle of the night..! 'And his name shall be Jesus Emmanuel'" Daniel paraphrased.
Jack tried to smile, but he was worried about the ramifications, too. "We'll face it together..." He assured his partner.
"How will two men ever be allowed to adopt a baby?" Daniel asked.
"Matt and Mohinder adopted Molly. They are Guardians to her, too!" Jack pointed out.
"But there were special circumstances when Matt and Mohinder agreed to be Molly's Guardians. She was left with them. She knew them. They help her with her Power." Daniel mentioned the growing number of people who were rumoured to possess powers these days... "Is Oma like Molly? Is she one of them? Is she what this Evolution is all about??"
"I don't know, Daniel..." Jack replied honestly.
"What will the child face, Jack?" Daniel asked.
"I don't know..." Jack repeated, vowing to protect the child properly. "I can understand why they chose you to protect the kid... The unadopted boy who's always wanted to adopt, to give a child the chance, and love," Jack said softly, trying not to be insensitive, holding Daniel's hand again, "he never had..." Jack paused again. "But why me? I screwed up with Charlie... I didn't keep him safe!" Jack spoke of the child he had who died, from his first, failed marriage to Sara, the only woman he'd ever tried to love.
"That was NOT your fault, Jack!" Daniel said, for the thousandth time. "NOT your fault!" He repeated. "He took your gun. He knew how to get to it, because he was determined to try!"
Jack looked at Daniel, then to the wall briefly, "Perhaps, we should go and see Mohinder, Molly, and Matt..."
"Are we going to tell them?" Daniel asked. "Are we even allowed to?"
***
Jack and Daniel sat in Matt and Mohinder's apartment.
"Our friend Vala had a child..." Daniel said. "She turned out to work for the bad guys, so," he lowered his voice, so that Molly, listening to her MP3 Player anyway, and doing her homework, definitely wouldn't hear him, "what if??"
"And what if the child is supposed to be some kind of Saviour to us all?" Jack asked. "This whole deal is very much like the announcement of the Immaculate Conception, or something!" He threw out his hands in a gesture to go with his words.
"Between you two..!?" Matt pondered. He looked to Mohinder, the man he'd come to love. "Is that even possible?"
Mohinder wondered. "Theoretically, I suppose! But it is much more likely that the child will come into your lives in some other way..." He assured his friends, or tried to.
"Waiting to find out how is..." Daniel couldn't fathom it. "I've always wanted a child, but sometimes, I wonder if just the idea is safer... The world is so cruel..." He trailed off again.
"It doesn't always have to be a tragedy..." Jack spoke.
"Sorry..." Daniel looked to him.
"No need for it..." Jack squeezed Daniel's hand kindly, as they sat beside each other.
"The idea can't be hurt... I can protect an idea!" Daniel stated.
"Wait and see!" Mohinder talked again. "You won't be alone in this, my friend." He said to Daniel.
"No. You won't be!" Jack reminded him. "This parenthood, or Guardianship thing, however it happens, is something we'll do together... Even Oma said so!"
"I wish I could meet this Oma DeSala..." Mohinder admitted, leafing through his father's book habitually.
Daniel caught not his first glimpse of Mohinder's father on the book jacket, and was instantly reminded of his one-time father-in-law, now also deceased, well, in a way, and, as he did so, facing whatever he did, Daniel tried not to see Conspiracies everywhere, and the children who might be asked, he hoped kind of, as it would be better than the alternative, to save the world!
The End
