Summary: Daniel and Jack decide to stop denying their feelings, and they resign
Info: This story is based on ideas half joking discussed with my boyfriend and my friend, Jan! Thank you, you two!
Jack and Daniel kissed.
"Who do we blame this on?" Daniel said afterward.
"No one but ourselves..." Jack mused.
"What, that it took this long, or that we made a decision which we're praying doesn't bring the world to its knees...?" Daniel asked.
Jack ignored the obvious jokes because he could see Daniel glaring at his response. "Both." He paused. "But maybe we're just being too full of our own self importance." He suggested. "They'd reduce us to 'nothing' but consultant staff soon anyway... The way things are going, we'll soon be too old for them, both of us..." he pointed out.
Daniel sighed. "You're not wrong there!"
"It's a cliché, Daniel, but I just couldn't take it any longer, y'know? And just lately, we've had so many...." He searched for the word, "signs..."
"Uhu..." Daniel agreed, pushing his body up tight to Jack's, kissing behind Jack's ear.
"It was you, wasn't it?" Jack suddenly asked.
"What did I do, and when?" Daniel checked before answering further.
"I remember seeing a man that looked very much like you, from afar, in my Academy days... That Harkness fella, when he rescued you that time, he took you to see me, didn't he?" Jack pondered the truth.
"I wanted to go to you, Jack, to tell you, well, you know what I wanted to tell you, to save you from going through it all, but I couldn't... If you hadn't joined, who knows where this planet would be now?"
"Right here, I hope!" Jack joked.
"You know what I mean, and it wouldn't be any better off!" Daniel assured him.
"Maybe, maybe not..." Jack stated. "But I get it, Daniel... I understand, and I'll never, ever blame you. Only myself. He was my son."
"Don't blame yourself, Jack. I've told you. You did everything you could to dissuade him from the course of action Charlie took that day...." Daniel told Jack yet again.
Jack looked away a second, then back to Daniel, with more tears in his eyes than he'd ever let Daniel see before, or meant to again...
"I'm sorry..." Daniel repeated gently.
"I told you, I don't blame you..." Jack said awkwardly.
"I know..." Daniel said, and kissed Jack again.
"Would we have been brave enough if we hadn't met Teal'c's friends that evening?" Jack recalled when they'd gone to one of these Jaffa Campfire get togethers with Teal'c, that had started to take place on Chulak since the defeat of the Goa'uld.
"They were pretty impressive..." Daniel smiled wryly, at the memory of Herakles, ex First Prime of Zeus, and his lover Iolaus, who just for the record, this time around in history at the very least, was not Herakles' nephew at all...
"Yes, I know you had a crush on Mr Herakles..!" Jack teased Daniel.
"No more, or less, than you did Captain Jack Harkness..! I saw the way you were looking at him when he brought me home safely!" Daniel reminded Jack.
"That was gratitude..!" Jack playfully explained. "And besides, it was you I was looking at in that way, Doctor Jackson!" He touched his hand to Daniel's chest, to where his heart lay, as he spoke.
Daniel grinned. "I know." He answered truthfully. "Jack taught me a thing or two before he dropped me home..."
"Ohh?" Jack enquired, trusting Daniel still.
"He told me about a man named Ianto... His own lover." Daniel explained.
"What is this? The International or Universal," Jack corrected himself, "Gay-O-Meter Express..??"
Daniel laughed out loud. "Maybe!" He said, eyes sparkling at Jack without him even realising it.
Jack was compelled to kiss Daniel again. "Thank you..." He said, when they came up for air.
"You've nothing to thank me for..." Daniel said, and he meant it. He still felt guilty that when he'd seen Jack that day, all those time travelled years ago, he hadn't stopped him from joining the Air Force, and therefore, hopefully, stopped the tragedy that had affected his whole family, no one more than Charlie.... Daniel kept trying to reassure himself with having learnt the lesson that you can't change things when he met The Gamekeeper years ago...
"Thank you for everything..." Jack repeated himself.
"Like what?" Daniel, almost flippantly, asked.
"Like that time in Baal's Prison..." Jack spoke of the time, that time, about which they never spoke.
"Ah..." Daniel mused.
"I needed that... I needed you so much, and you understood, you still understand... And yet, when you asked me to leave there with you, I couldn't..." Jack thought of that as one of the many times he had let Daniel down.
"I understand that, too... Totally." Daniel told him, with absolute honesty. He knew the reason for everything was Charlie, and it wasn't because Jack blamed Daniel for not stopping history, because, Daniel knew, Jack didn't.
Jack pulled Daniel even closer, and stood there, caressing him, for ages.
They both revelled in those several long moments, and then, kissed again.
At that precise moment, first Sam, then, Teal'c, then Janet, walked through the living room door...
Jack and Daniel, surprisingly, did not stop midway through their kiss, not even for an acknowledging second. Only when they were done, did they turn to face their friends...
"We didn't hear you guys come in..." Jack spoke up, arm around Daniel still.
"Evidently." Teal'c stated the damn obvious in that still exceedingly significant way only he ever seemed to be able to...
Sam stood there with her mouth open. Recovered, she then said simply, "I should have guessed..!"
Daniel smiled almost shyly. "The fact that you didn't meant we hid it well enough, even from ourselves..."
"And then, we got fed up of hiding it..!" Jack further explained. "So, we went to both Landry, and to Hammond, and resigned, telling them why we have done so... The joint chiefs can figure it out for themselves! I don't give a crap!!"
"But dishonourable discharge..?" Sam couldn't help considering.
"We got made into Consultants, as you will have found out before you came on over here..." Jack informed them, and Sam, who had, as an Officer herself, asked the immediate question.
Sam nodded in acknowledgement.
Janet finally spoke. "I'm so glad you finally worked it all out!" She beamed, stepping forward, and hugging them both in turn.
Jack and Daniel then turned to each other.
"Evidently," Daniel began, borrowing Teal'c's one word, which, for a change, was not 'Indeed', "we did not hide it well enough..!"
Jack grinned, hoping Janet was the only one they hadn't absolutely managed to hide their feelings from...
"Don't look so worried, you two!" Janet assured them. "This is a good thing!" She spoke of their relationship, still beaming a wonderful smile at them both with completely genuine emotion.
Sam then smiled, and stepped forward to them both. "It is..!" She stated, still a little shocked, but always honest. She kissed each of these two of her friends on the cheek.
"Indeed!" Teal'c said, when the path was clear for him to step up to his dear comrades and congratulate them. "Indeed!" He repeated himself, as he allowed a bear hug type embrace, with clapping on the back included, from each of them...
The End
