Summary: Alan Eppes thinks about his day, his work, his life, his loves, as he walks around the SGC
Alan Eppes walked down the SGC Corridor, passing Kara Thrace and Louanne Katraine on the way, or, he reminded himself, as she preferred to be known by, 'Kat' or 'Lou' – she told everyone that Louanne Katraine was a bit of a mouthful, and sounded rude if you said it when drunk! She had a point.
Alan was very tired. He and the Ethics Committee had just had a meeting, discussing in more detail something that had been brought up by a recent visit from Martin Lloyd. He figured calling himself a Human Rights Campaigner was no longer entirely accurate, even though the percentage of people through the Gate were actually 'just' transplanted humans, from eras long since past... 'Humanoid Campaigner? 'Alan wondered. No. Not everyone he dealt with was altogether humanoid! He laughed at his inner terminology. When did life get this complicated? When he joined the SGC, he knew that much! Marty Lloyd, who came to the SGC again not long ago, had once posed the question; does the Geneva Convention cover extra-terrestrials? The length to which that was true, and when it was more important than ever that that Ethic be implemented, was the crux of all the debates today. Thankfully, everyone agreed that, whenever truly possible, the decisions made by the SGC should reflect the rule, treat others the way you yourself would wish to be treated. Do unto others as you would wish be done to you. That was indeed the policy.
Earlier today, Alan was working with Calvin Siles, Sgt. Siles, Maintenance Engineer – a man who always had to be seriously innovative! With his background in Architecture and Structural Engineering, Alan's other job at the SGC, besides being a member of the Ethics Committee, was to work with Siles and the other Engineers who kept the SGC ticking over...
Alan knew that Calvin Siles' partner was Graham Simmons, but he would keep their secret forever; he only knew because Calvin had told him during a moment of extreme pressure, during a lockdown of the Base. Since he had come to work at the SGC, Alan had met Colonel Roger Bloom, his own partner. Yes, Alan had enjoyed a great marriage to Don and Charlie's Mom – But he was bisexual. He knew he was taking a risk, being in a gay relationship when he worked in a Military Installation, but though he worked alongside them, happily, on the whole, Alan had never been a man to let the Establishment entirely rule his life! The thing was, if you happened to love someone, you loved them, not talking about it wouldn't change that fact, and denying it wouldn't make some decisions any the less difficult, so may as well live alongside, or in, if you're lucky, love!
Alan wanted nothing more than to rest against Roger's wiry frame tonight. But tonight, they would be on Base. If they could get away with visiting in quarters, they might get some closeness at the end of the day...
The End
