Summary: A song makes Jack phone Daniel to say thank you
Info: The song that the inspiration and the title for this story came from is: If You Were A Sailboat, by Katie Melua
If you're a cowboy I would trail you,
If you're a piece of wood I'd nail you to the floor.
If you're a sailboat I would sail you to the shore.
If you're a river I would swim you,
If you're a house I would live in you all my days.
If you're a preacher I'd begin to change my ways.
Sometimes I believe in fate,
But the chances we create,
Always seem to ring more true.
You took a chance on loving me,
I took a chance on loving you.
If I was in jail I know you'd spring me
If I was a telephone you'd ring me all day long
If was in pain I know you'd sing me soothing songs.
Sometimes I believe in fate,
But the chances we create,
Always seem to ring more true.
You took a chance on loving me,
I took a chance on loving you.
If I was hungry you would feed me
If I was in darkness you would lead me to the light
If I was a book I know you'd read me every night
If you're a cowboy I would trail you,
If you're a piece of wood I'd nail you to the floor.
If you're a sailboat I would sail you to the shore.
If you're a sailboat I would sail you to the shore

Jack was transfixed by the song on the radio in the car, and when he got home, he went straight into the house, and phoned Daniel...
"Danny, listen..." He paused, after they'd said their hellos. "Did I ever tell you I'm... I'm grateful for when you stayed with me..?" It'd been a while since Ascended Daniel had stood by him when he was in Baal's cell. Jack wasn't even sure Daniel would remember it properly now, having just come back down to Earth, or this Galaxy, at any rate...
"When?" Daniel asked curiously.
"Lots of times really, but when Baal captured me mostly." Jack rushed on with his explanation now he'd started it. "I know I yelled at you for not helping me, not springing me from jail...But it wasn't true. You did want to set me free, and I couldn't go, because I had to wait, wait and find out something... But you did come to spring me from jail, that's the important thing, and even when I wouldn't come with you, you stayed with me..."
"There was no guarantee we'd have been on the same path, Jack... I would have liked it, but it wasn't set in stone." Daniel said. "So, stop feeling bad... It's okay. I get why you couldn't go." Daniel considered Charlie the reason and explanation, as he had then, he could now recall... If Jack had gone with Daniel, he would never have known. Ascension wasn't Heaven! Daniel had learnt that continuously while he was away...
"You wanna come over?" Jack asked quickly, before he lost his nerve.
"Yeah, I'll come over..." Daniel said, happy to do so.
"You remember where the house is?" Jack double checked.
"Jack, I came over last week, too!" Daniel reminded him, laughing.
"Yeah!" Jack said, trying to calm down. "You sure you're gonna be okay..?"
"I'll be fine, Jack... I promise you!" Daniel paused. "And I'll be over soon – It's not like I see enough of you at work!"
"Tired of me again so soon..?!" Jack joked.
"No, never." Daniel said. "I was never tired of you, my friend..."
"You called me Jim, or Jeff or something when we found each other again!!" Jack noted.
"Not seriously, Jack..." Daniel assured him. "You know I was joking! I could never forget you. It's kind of impossible actually, as evidenced by the fact that I kep coming back to you..!"
"Yeah., me and Teal'c!" Jack, joking again, pointed out.
"Teal'c had only the one visit..!" Daniel responded. "You had at least two, if I recall..."
"At least two, eh!??" Jack pondered, wondering when the other visits might have been. But he wasn't creeped out. He liked the idea that Daniel was always there with him, of course.
"So, when do you want me to come over?" Daniel asked lightly.
"Now will do, Danny..!" Jack smiled as he spoke into the phone.
"Okay, see you soon!" Daniel promised.
When Jack put the phone down after they'd said goodbye properly, he wondered if there would ever be a right time to tell Daniel that he loved him; he hadn't even been able to do it when Daniel was dying... He blamed that squarely on his own inadequacies, and the fear of being in the work environment while he was trying to find the words to say it...
